I've started working on the 'young traveller's guide to Auckland City' that I decided I would do when we used a particularly rad one in Europe, way back in.. 2009. Ouch!

This is a great idea! I am from Wellington but earlier this year a friend came to visit from Taiwan and we spent some time in Auckland - but apart from K Road I really wasn't sure where there would be good cafes, interesting music venues, good places for cocktails, etc...
It would be good if you could list regular events in there too - for example Craft 2.0 (I think there is an Auckland version of Craft 2.0) and perhaps places that are student/backpacker friendly that might offer some kind of discount - hairdressers and the like?
